Ceilidh Night Success

On Friday 20 November, the Parent Council held our usual autumn Ceilidh, which was as ever a lot of fun for parents and children alike and is a great fundraiser for the school.

Special thanks should go to everyone who organised and prepared for the event, and helped out on the night through selling raffle and tombola tickets, taking admission fees and with food etc.

Further special thanks are also due to the people and/or businesses who generously donated raffle prizes.

On the night we took £920.47, of which £374.37 was profit after the hall hire and band costs were taken into account. This is an excellent contribution to the work the Parent Council does to support the school. Thank you to all of you who were involved in any way!

Parent Council Quiz Night

On Saturday 30 May we had another fun night challenging the old grey matter during the Quiz Night fundraiser at Hyndland Bowling Club. While it was not as well attended as we had hoped, due to some great prizes on offer in the raffle we still managed to raise £280 profit after all of the outgoings were paid out, which was great. Prizes on offer included a one night stay with breakfast for two at the Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens, as well as a photography voucher for John Hendry Photography, a specially-cooked meal for two and some fine wine and whisky, among other prizes.

Pat Lawlor and Grant MacDonald returned to the Quiz Master and DJ roles that they have made their own over the years and gave us some really hard rounds (well, for some of us anyway!). After some refreshment imbibing and much head-scratching ‘The Misfits’ won the quiz. Well done to all 10 of them!

There will be further Quiz Nights and other social fundraising activities in the new school year and we look forward to seeing you there.

Special thanks! Thank you to all of those who supported the quiz and contributed food and raffle prizes. A special thank you to the General Manager at the Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens, Craig Paton, and John Hendry from John Hendry Photography for their raffle prize donations – this was very kind and generous of them and a great example of businesses supporting their local community.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Spring Clean

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Spring Clean!

After some confusing messages from the City Council, we eventually managed to get our annual Spring Clean off the ground on Sunday 31 May 2015. As usual we had a pretty good turnout of parents, pupils and teachers who turned up in their best casual gear to turn their green fingered hands to a spot of gardening, painting, washing and cleaning. There are now chalk boards in the P2/3 playground, more  painted wooden fences, multi-coloured toadstools (don’t try eating them!), a heavily scrubbed and somewhat cleaner bike shed and a much more aesthetically pleasing floral feast in the glass entrance than the usual jumble of unclaimed school bags, coats and clothes of various – and sometimes rather surprising – types.

Thank you to all of the parents, staff and children who were able to attend and help out, and to Janny John for being available and to Ms Helen Brown and Mr Garry Byrne for the sandwiches and cakes to keep us fuelled.

Special thanks: A particular thank you is due to Helen Gibson, who has been working committedly and tirelessly on the various floral and other gardening aspects around the school, even going so far as to gathering, sorting, washing, distributing or selling long discarded items in the lost property in order to tidy up the glass entrance to the school, as well as ensuring that this space formerly known as the jumble has been somewhat beautified with a range of flowers and tomato and strawberry plants. A big thank you!

Also, the Afty’s very own and inestimable Paddy Morrison deserves very special praise and thanks for giving up a big chunk of his Sunday off to open up the Afty to use a base for signing in, refreshments, rest and – as the Americans would say – restrooms, etc. Thank you Paddy, that was above and beyond the call of duty!

School Ceilidh

The ceilidh was another great success with parents and children alike enjoying another excellent evening of dancing, chatting and fun.

We managed to raise £570.30, which was less than usual and just about managed to cover the costs. The reason for the dip is because there were slightly fewer parents and children attending, we took a different approach to the raffle and there were fewer raffle prizes.

However, the main purpose of this event is for parents to enjoy some social time together and for the children to meet out of school and have a late night!

Thanks to everyone for coming, and particularly everyone who brought food for the huge buffet and raffle prizes, Grant and the band for the music, and a special mention to Gwen, Emma and Marie for helping out on the door, with the raffle and cleaning up.

Quiz Night

The Quiz Night on Friday 24 October was a roaring success with £322 profit made on the night from ticket sales and raffle money. It was an evening of fun and some really hard and innovative questions developed by our new quiz masters, Linda McCormick and Anne Wood. Even the titles of the rounds were cryptic, so it really was difficult knowing which of the rounds to play the joker on. As it happened, the victorious team took a gamble and held their joker (double points) round until the end, where more points were already available than in the previous rounds. Proudly (or sadly, I’m not so sure!), Archie MacPherson’s Lost Souls stormed past the night’s ongoing leaders, Mums on the Run, to reach the finishing tape with a clean sweep of all of the questions on Glasgow boozers! Archie may have been lost earlier in the evening (he was, he was looking for Hughenden and ended up at Hyndland Bowling Club), but his namesakes certainly found their way in the end.

Lost Souls

Lost Souls: from left to right, the winning team were Colin Forbes, Kirsty Jordan, Chris Watters, Helen Jordan, the Parent Council Chair John Lewis, Alan Bonnyman and Stevie Gallagher. The cans of lager were shared by all but the cup was taken home by Helen, to make up for all the previous last or second last places she’d previously been in.

Many thanks to all those who attended and also to those who brought food and raffle items.

School Open Day / Farmers Market

Thank you to all parents, carers, grandparents and friends who were able to donate produce from their gardens and allotments, as well as bake cakes, etc., on 17 September. John Lewis says that he did manage to donate some semi-burned cakes that he’d never previously made and sans recipe, and apologises retrospectively to anyone who purchased the mini bramble and apple crumble tarts, but hopes that his Welsh cakes were much more palatable!

We would also like to thank P4 parents Lisa Logan and Madeleine Hynes for helping the school set up and manages the stalls on the day. Thanks ladies!

Spring Clean 2013

Many thanks to Lesley-Anne, Lewis and Chloe Anderson, Pat and Grace Lawlor, Catherine Winchester, John Lewis, Stevie Gallagher, Russell, Rachel and Kitty McNeill, Melanie Van de Velde and Conor McLaughlan, Harry Grove, Louise Love and Douglas, Angus and Andrew Bain, Doug and Dylan Pritchard, Jon and Matilda Barr, Li Yang and Tom Gan, Rhona and Grant MacDonald, Ava McKechan, Kazim Khan, Caroline, Bella, Madeleine, Charlotte and Alexander Walker, Helen and Evan Gibson, Helen and Noah Jordan and Chris Watters, Kirsty and Erin Jordan, Alison Mussett, Lynn, Harry and Charlie Crawford, Helen Newstead and Lucia Overell, Fyzah and Sawera Wahab and Calum Shaw, Margaret and Beth Cuthbert, Lesley Inglis, Phil and Johnny Taylor, Les and Amy Wood, Liane (and anyone else I may have forgotten!) for all their hard work today. They were keenly assisted by Mrs Kerr, Ms Burring, Miss Liveston, Mrs MacQuarrie and Ms Laville. Special thanks also go to Amanda Storey for her tireless efforts in the garden and for the furthering of outdoor learning.

The weather was on our side and, amongst other tasks, “fedges” and a willow den were created, wild flower meadows were prepared, turf was shifted, a wall and railings were painted, benches were built, plants were planted, the greenhouse was mended, musical instruments were placed, a noticeboard was resurrected, ivy was chopped, pasta sauce plant pouches were posed, a boat sailed off into the distance and an extremely awkward cupboard was constructed at last!

Many thanks to Ross for opening the Afty to offer refreshments to weary workers.

Here are some photos of the day:

If you feel inspired to help out with further improvements to the playground and garden, look out for more outdoor learning developments or contact Mrs Kerr in school or Amanda Storey (njstorey@globalnet.co.uk) to find out how you can get involved.
